As the days lengthen we gradually move from spring into summer and breeding is in full swing. Amongst the more regular species Norfolk has some much sought after rare breeding specialities for those who know where to look.
In recent years the county has hosted two of the scarcest breeding raptors in the UK – the graceful and elegant Montagu’s Harrier and the unobtrusive Honey Buzzard. Our tours take in both these birds at their Norfolk hideaways together with that brightest of Mediterranean birds the Golden Oriole that looks very out of place in our poplar plantations.
Amongst the other species we seek out are Stone Curlew (aka Norfolk Plover!), Woodcock, Grasshopper Warbler, the perky Dartford Warbler in its heathland home, Woodlark, Tree Pipit, Firecrest, our famous Common Cranes, Common Buzzard, Marsh Harrier and Hobby. These are always accompanied by a plethora of more common warblers, finches and buntings singing and going about their daily business.
At this time of the year the evenings provide still further birding opportunities as Nightingales burst into song and then as darkness falls the mysterious churring and wing-clapping of Nightjars provides a fitting end to many a memorable day.
The possibility of rare wanderers is also never very far away. May and June is the peak time for rare overshoots from more southerly climes such as Woodchat, Subalpine Warbler, Cattle Egret and Purple Heron. You never know what might turn up…
